Tick Season

Yesterday I pulled a tick out of Emma's belly button and then swabbed the wound with alcohol. This morning it was red and itchy, so we swabbed again, filled her belly button with triple antibiotic ointment, and pasted on a bandage. After school we cleaned it out again, more ointment, and another bandage. I'm watching that thing, 'cuz tick-borne illnesses are no fun.

What did the tick look like? Did you type it? Apparently different types spread different diseases.

I haven't done any Web sniffing yet, but it was about 2-3 mm in diameter and had a small white spot on its back. Emma told me that indicates a female.

That is a good kind apparently... doesn't cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever (which is common around here) or Lyme disease (which is not), but can carry a newly identified type of virus/bacteria (I think bacteria) that mimics RMSF but is milder. Good luck! And also apparently if you get them out before they swell up, they haven't had a lot of time to inject you with disease.

I'm itchy now. :p

Good to know, thanks. It's still pretty red and oozy, but we're rootin' around in there several times a day with alcohol and whatnot.
