Ella

We found Ella-the-dog at the Chapel Hill pound when she was a puppy, back in 1994 when we'd been married just one month. She was a good dog. Lately she'd lost her hearing, had a nosedive in cognitive ability that caused her to walk in small circles all day, couldn't use her back legs well, and spent at least one night this week sleeping in her own waste. It was time. She had her "final vet visit" late this afternoon. We miss her already.

Jane told the kids at the bus stop. I'm so sorry for your loss. She was a sweetheart. Hugs to you all.

A Champion of her breed in all the ways that matter to family. Her dedication to your family and humble requirement makes her passing one of tearful sadness. An irreplaceable jem. A gift from God.

Thanks Dad -- your warm words are comforting. It's nice to know that she was appreciated by her extended family as well. We will miss her.

I am sorry, she was a sweet patient dog. I hope the kids are alright, and you too. She looks so cute in the pic, but there is a lot more than cuteness that makes one love a dog.

Thanks, everyone.

Sorry to hear about Ella. I hope Emma and Jane aren't too disturbed by her death. Sixteen years is a very full life for a dog.

I remember Ella and Corey from when they were puppies. She was gentle and amazingly well-behaved. The world seems a little lonelier now that there's no longer Ella scratchily insisting "Love me now!"
