Overheard

In the Regulator Bookshop hangs a framed copy of that John Locke quote, "Books seem to me to be pestilent things, and infect all that trade in them with something very perverse and brutal." I watched a teenager read it and then ask her mother who John Locke was. "Oh, he's that character from 'Lost'," replied the mother. I confess that I didn't intervene. I am ashamed.

I think my mouth would have opened in preparation to say something, and then realized I couldn't explain in one sentence.
